Set Boundaries. Be Happy.

“Well, I sent that email…,” she grinned.

She had a client who was absolutely draining her energy, and finally did something about it.

As an exceptionally intuitive and skillful healer, she poured everything into her work. And she knew she had to protect herself for her business to last. We developed strategies for protecting her energy – but she still had a hard time saying no.

One client required more than most, and left her exhausted. To make matters worse, his appointments were usually in the evening, adding a difficult session to an already long day.

So she sent out an email announcing a decision to change a few things, including an end to appointments after 5 p.m.

And she felt instant relief.

It took her weeks to get to that decision. And depending on your own work style, that may seem rather silly. After all, you’re the boss, right? If you don’t want to see people in the evening, then don’t!

But many of you will totally get it – because you see people at crazy hours, too. And if your cash flow is down it’s even worse.

When you are a heart-centered entrepreneur, you’re driven by the satisfaction of serving your clients. You care deeply about their results, and will go the extra mile to help them in any way you can.

And you hate saying no. :)

Sooner or later, that will get you in trouble. Continue reading

Why You Need to Be Out There Speaking

“The buzz in the room was infectious…”

…That’s what one fellow said after a talk I gave recently to a group of entrepreneurs in Dublin, Ireland. And he was right.

I could feel their excitement, as I led them through an exercise that challenged them to get clear about their business. Though they were reluctant at first, the momentum really shifted once they got started. And afterwards, they couldn’t wait to share their aha’s, and the excitement they felt about their next steps.

Being a part of moments like that is just plain fun, and is one reason I love speaking to entrepreneurs.

But the truth is that public speaking has been one of the most effective tools I’ve used to promote almost every business I’ve ever created.

And you should be out there, speaking to your ideal clients too.

The One Thing You Must Protect – No Matter What

“I told my friend what you said…”

Uh oh. I always hold my breath when a client says something like this. What did I say this time?

“I told her about my new packages, and how you said I need to raise my rates.”

Oh. That. Well then.

“She didn’t think that was such a good idea…”

Of course she didn’t, I thought to myself. That’s why she’s not your coach.

And I set about working to repair the damage to my client’s confidence.

Is Your Business Calling You to Grow?

Oh that’s B.S., and you know it!” my friend exclaimed.

Her lips were tight. Her voice tense. And there was a fierceness in her eyes that startled me.

I have a lot of friends who speak their minds, and I’m used to them coming from the blunt end of the interpersonal spectrum.

But this was different. I knew she was speaking from love – but for a second, I thought she was mad.

She wasn’t.

She was frustrated – and determined; determined to get me to see something I just couldn’t see.

How to Tell When It’s Your Time to Grow

It may just be a growth spurt, you know.

Or the start of one.

Whatever this is that’s bugging you, this “thing” that just doesn’t feel right; it might just be that things are changing inside for you – in a good way.

It usually starts as an uncomfortable feeling, a sense that something is wrong, out of whack, not what it should be. Sometimes those feelings are a whisper, just below the surface. Sometimes they’re shouting in your face.

Either way, they get harder and harder to ignore when you are being challenged – more and more – to grow. Continue reading
